Associate Dean Application Deadline

The college extended the deadline for internal applications from tenured faculty for the position of associate dean for academic programs. Review of applications begins today, May 7. Read more

Voting Results

The faculty voted unanimously (39 yes) to accept changes to the back of the catalog for 2019-2020 as presented at the April 23 college faculty-staff meeting.

Graduate College Candidate Forums

Carlton Basmajian, associate professor and DOGE in the Department of Community and Regional Planning, is one of four candidates for associate dean of the Graduate College. Open forums will be held this week. See schedule online.

Reminder: Bicycle Needs Assessment Survey

ISU Facilities Planning and Management and Toole Design Group are conducting a survey to determine needs and to guide planning and implementation of bike facilities, parking, policies and programs. Read more and take the survey by Friday, May 18.

Reminder: Iowa Architectural Foundation Fundraiser

Join the Iowa Architectural Foundation for “Mies en scene,” a special evening to celebrate architect Mies van der Rohe’s modernistic masterpiece, the historic Home Federal Savings and Loan Association building (built 1959-1962), now housing the Catholic Pastoral Center / Diocese of Des Moines, which recently completed a four-year restoration of the building. The event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at 601 Grand Ave., Des Moines. Tickets are $100, with proceeds benefiting the Iowa Architectural Foundation. Read more

Reminder: State Fair Exhibit Volunteers

A lighted pavilion based on a design by an interdisciplinary team of College of Design students will be featured at Iowa State's display at the 2018 Iowa State Fair. Volunteers are needed to staff the exhibit in two shifts per day, Thursday, Aug. 9, through Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. This is a great opportunity to represent the college and get free admission and parking at the fair. Read more and sign up to volunteer

Udall Scholar

Zoey Mauck, a senior working toward double degrees in community and regional planning and landscape architecture, has been named a 2018 Udall Scholar, one of only 50 students nationwide selected for the prestigious honor. Read more

Des Moines Courthouse Studio

An interdisciplinary group of students in Morrill Professor and Pickard Chilton Professor in Architecture Thomas Leslie's spring option studio tackled a difficult project looking at ways to integrate mixed-use residential and commercial needs on the same site as a federal courthouse with stringent security constraints. Thomas Leslie

Morrill Professor Thomas Leslie, the Pickard Chilton Professor in Architecture, presented two keynote lectures in honor of the opening of the Pier Luigi Nervi: Art and Science of Building traveling exhibition at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He presented "Beauty's Rigor: Patterns of Production in the Work of Pier Luigi Nervi" Saturday, May 5, and "Nervi's Harmonious Interplays" Sunday, May 6.

Alenka Poplin & Ulrike Passe

"Transforming Pervasive into Collaborative: Engaging Youth as Leaders with GIS through a Framework that Integrates Technologies, Storytelling, and Action," an article by Iowa State University faculty Alenka Poplin, assistant professor of community and regional planning, Linda Shenk, associate professor of English, and Ulrike Passe, associate professor of architecture, has been published in the International Journal on Interaction Design & Architecture(s) (IxD&A), Vol. 35, pp. 182-204.
