This is a weekly listing of announcements and news sent via e-mail on Mondays (except holidays) to all College of Design faculty and staff. To have information included in the weekly update, please forward all materials to Heather Sauer ( by 9 a.m. on Monday of the week they should appear. College Graduation Convocation

The College of Design's fall undergraduate and graduate convocation will take place this Saturday, Dec. 16. A reception for graduating students and their families will be at 9:30 a.m. in the Lightfoot Forum followed by a recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. in Kocimski Auditorium. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend and wish our graduates a personal farewell.

City Data for Decision Makers Reports

The ISU Extension and Outreach Indicators Portal team has released "City Data for Decision Makers" reports for all 945 cities in Iowa. Reports include data from the US Census Bureau's Dec. 7 release of the 2012-2016 American Community Survey and can be downloaded through the Indicators Portal. Read more

Project LEA/RN Workshop

ISU's Project LEA/RN will host a free workshop from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Jan. 3-4, devoted to insights about the brain based on current research and its implications, strategies that promote interaction and deep thinking, and application of these strategies to learning situations (classes, orientation sessions, meetings, etc.). Diversity Perspectives In-Service

Please plan to attend the "Expanding Diversity Perspectives: Collegewide In-Service" scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in Kocimski Auditorium. Mark Gray, a professor of anthropology and director of the Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration at UNI, will lead this workshop on managing cultural differences in the classroom and better engaging the communities we serve. Iowa State senior sees health setback as 'a blessing in disguise'

A health scare forced industrial design senior Kevin Burgoni to delay graduation by one semester. But the delay provided opportunities he wouldn't otherwise have had, and helped him secure a job with Vermeer Corp. in Pella, where he'll start working in January. Read more

ISU senior works to make biking more accessible

Zoey Mauck, a fourth-year student double-majoring in landscape architecture and community and regional planning, hopes to extend her own passion for cycling by making it easier for others to bike through their communities. Read more

Honors, Awards & Publications

Elizabeth Bixenman

Interior design senior Elizabeth Bixenman received a $4,500 scholarship from the North Central chapter of NEWH, the Hospitality Industry Network, to fund her final semester of college next spring. She also received a free two-year NEWH membership, which will allow her to attend the organization's meetings, events and conferences. A news release is forthcoming.

Ulrike Passe

Ulrike Passe, associate professor of architecture and director of the Center for Building Energy Research, received the 2017 Educator Award from the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects earlier this semester. Read more

Luis Rico-Gutierrez

College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez is one of four professionals recently named Senior Fellows of the Design Futures Council. Read more

Andrea Wheeler

An article by architecture Assistant Professor Andrea Wheeler has been published in Angelaki: Journal of the Theoretical Humanities, Issue 4. Read more A paper Wheeler co-authored with alumna Rucha Newalkar (MS 2017 Architecture) has been published in the IAFOR International Conference on the City 2017: Official Conference Proceedings. Zoey Mauck

Zoey Mauck, a fourth-year student double-majoring in landscape architecture and community and regional planning, received a $1,000 Study Abroad Grant from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She will use the grant toward study abroad at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm next spring. Read more
