AMES, Iowa — Fei Xue, an Iowa State University graduate student in integrated visual arts, will present her final thesis exhibition May 12-19 in the ISU College of Design's Gallery 181.

Titled "The Dreamer: An Examination of Chinese Philosophical Concepts through Animation," the show will feature a two-dimensional animation that incorporates three-dimensional character rendering.

"Untitled" (48"x36", textile, calligraphy, digital medium, 2016) by Fei Xue.

This will be accompanied by textiles, digital illustrations, storybords, script installations and work process sketches Xue, of Shaanxi, China, developed during her graduate studies at Iowa State. She will receive a Master of Fine Arts in integrated visual arts in August.

The show will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 12, with a brief artist's talk and a screening of the animation at 6:30 p.m. in Gallery 181, located on the first floor of the College of Design building on the west side of the Iowa State campus. Exhibition hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Xue's work is influenced by her journey from China to America and memories of her early education in China, she said.

"My animation was inspired by an obscure Chinese philosophy—'mountains are mountain'’—which originated from Zen Buddhism. It is an examination of conventional truth, ultimate truth and the process of knowledge acquisition," Xue said.

"Throughout the animation, I address perspectives related to race, immigrant status, cultural perception, ethnoscape, identity and nostalgia. My intention is to retell and reinterpret traditional Chinese social norms and philosophical concepts to the Western audience."

Xue received a bachelor's degree in media communication from the China Agricultural University in 2010. After graduation this summer, she plans to pursue a career as a professional visual artist.
